Internet SOS - Save Our Systems


It is believed that China's Military is the chief suspect in the attack on Google's email infrastructure and its servers.

The ability to disable anything - "From power grids to the Stock Exchange", says Duncan B. Hollis and David G. Post of the National Law Journal. "Thicker Firewalls and better mechanisms to detect and repel cyberspace attack strategy." How to defend Military, Private, Commercial, and Worldwide infrastructure(s) is a chief concern for cyberspace attack issues.

A Tanker Ship Captain who was requesting aid sent an SOS via wireless radio. The call was heard almost immediately. A helicopter was dispatched as well the sea going vessel that initially received the call. Pirate vessels were descending upon the hapless vehicle, an Indian Oil Tanker.

The pirate boats aborted their attack for fear of the chopper and the arriving rescue ship. The receipt of an SOS by International Law requires its reception by seagoing (air as well) vessels to render assistance "at all possible speed." This particular incident occurred off the coast of Somalia, January 2009. What about the assistance duties of cyberspace? A Captains mayday call or distress signal requires immediate response and or assistance. In today's world of cybernetics, hyperlinks, and various information and data transmission (transportation)...legal issues arise in responsibility assistance and protection in and on the Internet - a virtual sea. The new type of pirate is here to challenge an threaten all with its "new form of attack(s)." The hacking of a million plus computers that encountered blocked Internet access was commandeered by the hack-attack. Internet networks and Intranets became vulnerable as well. The cyber attack filled newspaper headlines around the world. Government Network Operations, Emergency Telephone Connections, Electronic Banking Services, Hospitals, Colleges and Universities endured major communication and transmission interruptions in 2007.

The compromise of these networks and millions of connecting nodes has suffered repeated attacks. It has also been reported that militaries by the dozens have combined its forces and created what's known as "Cyberforce."

Security measures, in many cases, challenge hackers to improve their techniques while attacking vulnerable "Open Networks." Identifying locations of attackers arise from the structure of the Internet. It is almost impossible to enforce the "Cyberspace Criminal Law(s). Military "Laws of War" do not apply so easily when it comes to law enforcement in cyberspace - the tools are merely instrumental protection for "Internet Users." This recognition can therefore be quite effective in the fight against hackers. Entities in a position to assist would have an opportunity to respond to the sender of the SOS. Attackers could be cut off from users in need. The attackers could be traced to its origin(s) and thereby canceling out further interference from the cyber attack source.

Decisions to assist come only from providers that wish to utilize the aid resources. Holding cyberspace attackers accountable for their destruction/disruptions is not an easy task. All that providers can do is to keep the attack to a minimum level and provide assistance upon availability. The SOS in cyberspace can be heard. Most "Cloud" entities, agencies, and companies are capable of defending their Intranets and Quasi-Networks from major attacks by hackers with many protection tools and firewalls. It does not mean the law can't or won't intervene, especially when defensive and/or preventive measures have been implemented.

The point of the matter is that Internet users can and should expect and receive help from the Internet Cops. The village at large is or at least should be involved in the prevention and reporting of cyberspace attacks.

Will Cloud Computing Crush Viruses from Catastrophic Calamity on Your Computer?


Will Americans be any safer from the coming cyber storm as Internet Technology evaporates into the clouds? Will users be safe from hackers with cloud computing? Will their data, identity, money, etc, be safe in the clouds? I wonder, I am very skeptical, but let's talk.

There was an interesting article recently in Homeland Security news which discussed the inherent safety of cloud computing running devices with no executable files, or ways for computer viruses to get in and load themselves onto the computer. The article was titled "Is Google's Chromebook impervious to viruses?" which was published 16 May 2011. Have you heard about the new laptops Google is planning, they will run on completely on the cloud, and without the need for Anti-Virus software - what about the computer anti-virus software industry the article asks? Good point indeed.

Now then, I have a question about all this; what about an internal challenge at the data center, or elimination of the data center due to a terrorist attack? What if a disgruntled employee puts a virus into that data center? The article also states I am not alone in my worries, "but, not all analysts are convinced that Google's Chromebook is as secure as they claim; this move to a cloud based computer could signal a broader shift that could hamper the antivirus industry's future prospects."

They Promise to Save Us from Cyber Pearl Harbor Attacks - But Can We Trust Them?

The US Government is also working on Cyber Security too. Yes there was a very interesting article in Physorg [dot] com recently titled; "White House unveils global cyberspace strategy" by Chris Lefkow posted on May 16, 2011, which states in the first sentence that they administration "unveiled a set of policy proposals Monday for international cooperation in ensuring an open and secure Internet," and in the article it stated that; "To date, the international community has lacked the collective willingness to engage in a meaningful conversation on the need for a global approach," he said. "US leadership is critical to reaching a consensus solution."

Can we really trust this Administration to protect the American People from Cyber Attack? No, absolutely not, say I, but let me explain my points of contention why. First, if the government attempts to move to all devices being on the cloud, and it can control everything (for reasons of security) then in essence they will create another "Great Wall of China" type scenario, basically eliminating any and all privacy - forever. As an American, well, you can understand I have a problem with all of this.

Technology Band-Aid

Within the security world, particularly information security, there is a prevailing attempt to �shoot the messenger� so to speak, or at least to think that if only someone could build a better messenger, maybe the message would be better.

Let me explain. When the personal information of hundreds of thousands of individuals is compromised at companies such as ChoicePoint, LexisNexis or the DSW Shoe Warehouse, many people leap to the conclusion that lax computer or network security is to blame or that someone should develop a new technology or application that protects the data better.

At the heart of many �technical� attacks are poorly designed security practices or simple human error. In some cases, an attacker may gain access to a corporate database through the Internet, but that does not necessarily mean that the database or the Internet are to blame. They are just a medium or a tool. If the database was configured more securely or the network architecture built so that the database server was not reachable from the public Internet, there would not be a problem.

A recent trend for attackers gathering information they can use to breach potential targets is to use Google. Dubbed �Google hacking�, some are quick to blame the search engine technologies. If only the search engine didn�t catalog and index that data, or if only their search engine algorithm could somehow filter out the sensitive information. But, the true issue in most cases is that poor security practices or human error led to confidential or sensitive information being available on the Web where it shouldn�t be. The fault is with the company for leaving the data exposed, not with Google for indexing it.

It seems like there is always finger-pointing at technology as the crux of various security problems. On the other side of the coin are those who look to technology as the ultimate protector and savior of security and constantly strive to create a tool that will block, detect, filter or otherwise eradicate all of these concerns. But, unless we evolve to some futuristic world like you find in the Terminator or Matrix movies, none of those solutions can fix the single weakest link in the security chain, human beings.

It is certainly possible to create technology bandaids that try to protect us from ourselves, but as long as people are willing to share sensitive, personal information with strangers just because there may be a chance they could win theater tickets, the general state of security will continue pretty much as it is. A little education and an ounce of common sense will go much farther than snappiest of new whiz-bang security technologies could ever dream of.

Protect Your Child From Cyber Stress


The internet is a wonderful thing and the benefits truly outweigh any negatives, but there is always a dark side to anything and the internet is no exception.

Our children are most at risk from this dark side as they are far less likely to be prepared to cope with situations online which could potentially harm them. Apart from the risk of children being groomed or befriended by people who would want to harm them physically there is another much more common and perhaps much more subtle danger online, cyber bullying.

With the popularity of social networks our children are now being faced with bullies online, who are prepared to say anything to embarrass, anger and frightened for fun. Whereas traditional bullying would perhaps be on a one to one basis and only during school hours, cyber bullying can be witnesses by the recipients friends too and at all times of the day or night, potentially making it far more harmful to the individual.

The daily stress of being bullied online can be hidden from parents and can build up to level which can start to affect the child's physical and mental health, sometimes even causing suicide attempts.

So what can be done to protect our children from the cyber bully?

1. Parents need to monitor what their children are viewing online. This should be done in agreement with the child by explaining why you need to do this and that it is for their own safety. There are various ways you can monitor your child's Internet usage, you can either look at the history logs on the computer or you can become a friend within your child's social network group, that way you will see what is being said. Monitoring needs to be done in a unobtrusive a way as possible, after all you don't want to intrude on your child's freedoms, but you need to make sure that they are not being abused or bullied too.

2. Encourage your children to talk to you about their problems, let them know that it is OK for them to tell you if they are being bullied or if they are unsure of something online. Let them know that they will not be in any trouble and that you will be supportive and help them with any issues without becoming angry.

3. Spending time with your child online together is a good way to teach them about how they should behave online and what and is not acceptable. Show by example and pass on internet security practices such as not giving too many details about themselves online like their age, address, telephone number etc.

Defending your Network against the APT

You might be acquainted with the ?old school? meaning of the word ?apt,? which refers to someone who is unusually intelligent and/or able to learn quickly and easily. Put it in all caps ? APT ? and in the context of IT security, and it takes on a whole new meaning: Advanced Persistent Threat. This term is used to describe organizations (especially governments) or, less frequently, smaller groups of individuals that have the ability and intent to wage an ongoing cyber-attack against specific targets using sophisticated methods (note the key words).

Some definitions apply the term only to attacks sponsored by nation/states and some narrow it down to threats that are intended to steal data in general or intellectual property (IP) in particular. Here?s a discussion of what APT means to different security experts.

In this article, we?ll take a look at how the APT has evolved and what you need to do to defend your network against this type of threat.

Some network admins will take a look at that definition and conclude that their networks aren?t at risk. Why would a small or midsized business be targeted by a big cybercrime organization or a nation-state? The APT began as a threat primarily confined to government agencies and the defense industry but then APT operators expanded their horizons to target companies such as Google. But your company doesn?t have to be a tech behemoth to be targeted. While it?s true that a government agency or a large multi-national corporation involved in national security or defense contracting, or maybe high finance, might be a more attractive target for the APT, size really doesn?t matter ? and many small companies these days store data that could be used in piecing together the sort of intelligence needed by these organizations to gain political or economic advantage. Even individuals who work in positions where they have access to that type of information could be targeted through their home computers, laptops or mobile devices.

Even large enterprises that invest tons of money in security can still be breached by the APT, through many different means. Sometimes it?s as simple as the exploitation of known vulnerabilities that haven?t been patched. In the enterprise environment, often the policy dictates that new updates be tested thoroughly before being deployed to production machines. This can save you a lot of grief in the event of incompatibilities, but it also leaves those systems open to exploit. In other cases, wi-fi vulnerabilities, smartphone bridging, of even infiltration of a cloud provider?s network may offer the APT a way in.

In any size company, if employees visit web sites, use email (especially HTML mail), transfer files, etc., those activities can be taken advantage of to deliver the APT components. Malware can be conveyed through drive-by downloads, infected attachments, and infected files. Companies with excellent edge protection still aren?t safe from internal delivery via infected removable drives (USB sticks, flash cards), laptops that were infected elsewhere, and similar means.

It?s called ?advanced? because those who are behind APTs have a sophisticated plan based on a specific strategy, even if they use relatively unsophisticated mechanisms to carry them out. In other words, the APT operators don?t necessarily have to be master hackers; they may use scripts available on the Internet, and modify others? malware to work for them. Or they may create custom malware to fit their specific objectives. Often they use many different types of attacks against the same target, and keep coming back over and over; thus the description ?persistent.? However, depending on the ultimate objective, this may be done in a stealthy and low profile way rather than a huge, overwhelming attack.?In fact, APT operators are often masters of stealth, taking steps to cover their tracks and avoid leaving tell-tale evidence of their intrusions in the logs for as long as possible.

Toward that end, APT operators also employ social engineering techniques and/or recruitment of insiders to obtain valid credentials. Branch offices that may have less stringent security precautions than the main location, but have a trust relationship, are sometimes infiltrated for easier remote access to plant malware on the targeted systems. Once that malicious software is in place, they are able to access and control your systems from anywhere they want, or automate the process so that the malware sends your sensitive data back to them.

The tools used by APT operators will depend on what their objectives are and the state of your own network?s configuration and security. Here?s a simple analogy: a burglar might be able to use a credit card to open the door to a house that has simple locks, but if all the doors are dead-bolted, he?ll need different tools to get in. Likewise the APT operator will generally use the simplest tool that will get the job done. Why waste a custom, sophisticated tool on a job that doesn?t require it??That just gives you the opportunity to analyze it, figure out how to defend against it and alert others to its existence.

APT operators frequently utilize botnets, which give them more resources for launching the attack and also make it more difficult to track back to the origins of the attack. Although botnets are often associated with spam, they can be used for many types of attacks. A single command and control server can control thousands of computers that are located in hundreds of different organizations. The malware on those machines can be constantly updated, to stay ahead of your detection methods. Even if your company isn?t the target of an APT attack, it can be used without your knowledge as a tool of the crime ? hosting infected ?zombie? agents that are part of a botnet that?s used to attack other networks. Botnet tracker reported more than 2000 suspected botnets as of September 1, 2011.

It?s important to understand that an APT is not a particular method of attack ? rather, it describes the ?who, what and why? rather than the ?how.? That means there is no commercial solution that can claim to specifically detect or defend against APTs. Unfortunately, APT has become a popular buzzword and marketing phrase with security vendors (many of whom don?t even know what it means).

Solutions that rely on definitions for known attacks are likely to fail to detect sophisticated APT attacks that are designed to operate in ?stealth mode.? Detecting APTs requires a good monitoring solution that is able to identify and analyze the subtle changes and anomalies on servers and clients that are common to APT attacks. Regardless of how brilliantly a criminal plans and executes a crime, he inevitably must leave something of himself at the scene; in a physical criminal investigation, this means trace evidence ? evidence that is not noticeable and may even be invisible to the naked eye. In a digital world, the APT operator, in order to carry out his objective (entering the network, planting the malware, copying the data) will leave some obscure footprint somewhere in the system. Your security software must be capable of recognizing these markers as indications of possible malicious activity. Software is not only faster but can be more effective at doing this than a manual examination of the files, since APT operators often use such tricks as giving their malware files filenames that are very similar to common Windows files. The software can detect the slightest difference in the file name (such as the substitution of an uppercase I for a lowercase L (l) that the human eye would not recognize. ?

Once anomalies have been detected, this should trigger closer examination of the affected machine(s). Another key element is timely notification, so the machine(s) can be fully examined as soon as possible and evidence of the APT can be preserved for examination, since a knowledgeable APT operator will attempt to delete as many of the markers as possible to avoid detection.

Whereas technology is best for detecting anomalies on the network, another aspect of APT detection requires the human factor. That means people who can gather intelligence about what?s going on in the cybercriminal underground. Just as more traditional terrorists often signal that an attack is imminent through increased ?chatter,? APT operators may signal that attacks are being planned or are already in progress (undetected) through various communications. You don?t necessarily have to have someone in your own organization who intercepts and analyzes the chatter, but you should keep abreast of what?s going on in the world of cybercrime through related publications, relationships with the appropriate law enforcement professionals, and so forth.

Many of defensive measures that protect against APT are the same ones you have probably deployed already, to protect against more ?run of the mill? malware and intrusion threats. Good anti-virus and anti-malware software is critical, but it?s also important to understand that in the case of the APT, the perpetrators often have resources that are way beyond those of the average hacker/attacker. That means they can hire programmers who are capable of creating or modifying malware ?on the fly? for which no security vendors have created definitions ? Zero Day threats.

Because the APT is, by definition, a targeted attack, your company?s public actions and reputation can have a bearing on whether or not it becomes a victim of an APT attack. Thus reputation/brand monitoring and management can be an important component in preventing such attacks. ?Evil corporations? and organizations that take a position (political, social or otherwise) that is unpopular with APT operators are those that are likely to be targeted. In some cases, just being in a particular industry (oil company, banking, etc.) is enough to make you ?evil? in the attackers? eyes. However, in some cases you can reduce your risk by carefully cultivating your public image.

Join in with other organizations that are dedicated to detecting, reporting and taking down botnets. Information sharing and notification are important parts of mitigating the botnet threat, as proposed here.

By destroying some of the tools used by APTs (such as botnets), we can help to protect not only our own networks but the entire Internet ecosystem from this growing threat.

Microsoft big shift

When Azure was first announced at the PDC in 2008, Microsoft wasn�t a recognized player in the cloud industry. It was the underdog to the giants Google and Amazon, which had been offering cloud services for years by that time. Building and deploying Azure was a big bet for Microsoft. It was a major change in the company�s direction, from where Microsoft had been and where it needed to go in the future. Up until that time, Microsoft had been a product company. It designed and built a product, burnt it to CD, and sold it to customers. Over time, the product was enhanced, but the product was installed and operated in the client�s environment. The trick was to build the right product at the right time, for the right market.

With the addition of Ray Ozzie to the Microsoft culture, there was a giant shift toward services. Microsoft wasn�t abandoning the selling of products, but it was expanding its expertise and portfolio to offer its products as services. Every product team at Microsoft was asked if what they were doing could be enhanced and extended with services. They wanted to do much more than just put Exchange in a data center and rent it to customers. This became a fundamental shift in how Microsoft developed code, how the code was shipped, and how it was marketed and sold to customers.

This shift toward services wasn�t an executive whim, thought up during an exclusive executive retreat at a resort we�ll never be able to afford to even drive by. It was based on the trends and patterns the leaders saw in the market, in the needs of their customers, and on the continuing impact of the internet on our world. Those in charge saw that people needed to use their resources in a more flexible way, more flexible than even the advances in virtualization were providing. Companies needed to easily respond to a product�s sudden popularity as social networking spread the word. Modern businesses were screaming that six months was too long to wait for an upgrade to their infrastructure; they needed it now.

Customers were also becoming more sensitive to the massive power consumption and heat that was generated by their data centers. Power and cooling bills were often the largest component of their total data-center cost. Coupling this with a concern over global warming, customers were starting to talk about the greening of IT. They wanted to reduce the carbon footprint that these beasts produced. Not only did they want to reduce the power and cooling waste, but also the waste of lead, packing materials, and the massive piles of soda cans produced by the huge number of server administrators that they had to employ.
