Network Support: In House Or Outsource

Network support deals with the maintenance of an existing computer network. It is focused on maintaining the overall integrity of the system, which includes security and efficient local area networking (LAN) or wide area networking (WAN) connectivity throughout the organization. Oftentimes, the service of a computer engineer is tapped for this purpose.

The Importance of Proper Network Maintenance

Arguably, business will not flourish at the rate it does today without a reliable computer network system. This allows almost instantaneous access to information, as well as communication convenience via LAN or WAN. Another advantage is that it allows the sharing of useful productivity software with the different workstations. This is not to say that business cannot exist without computerization. But its absence will surely slow down business transactions.

And to keep the system up and running, network support is needed. Of course this presupposes that you have an effective and reliable computer network system to start with. Aside from the basic hardware and software

Maintenance, this particular IT function deals with the following:

1. Network monitoring in order to spot problems and likely problem areas with the end in view of quick rectification or system improvement so as to minimize user downtime.

2. Keeps track of assignment of network resources through proper housekeeping and control.

3. Performs network upgrades when necessary.

4. Deployment and provisioning of network resources to give priority to specific users.

5. Maintains and continually updates network security to prevent virus infestation and hackers.

In order to provide the necessary service, the computer and network security companies' staff directly involved should have the necessary qualifications. Oftentimes they are engineers capable of system maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting. The educational background required is either a computer science degree or one in computer engineering.

In-house Network Support or Third Party Service Provider

Depending on the needs of the organization, this function may be done by an in-house group, usually part of the IT department, or outsourced. Usually, there are cost implications, the former being more expensive. But aside from the cost consideration, the choice will also depend on factors such as:

1. The complexity of the IT operations. If the computer network set-up is specialized so as to cater to the unique needs of the organization, it may necessitate having a specially trained in-house group to do the job.

2. Sensitivity and impact of operations. If lives are dependent on the proper operation of the computer network or lives will be lost in the event of a malfunction, it is best to have an in-house team, which will give top priority to managing and maintaining your network on a 24/7 basis.

3. If the cost of maintaining an in-house network support group can be maximized by economies of scale. This is especially applicable in a holding company set-up or conglomerates.

If the decision is to have a third party perform the function, there are groups which can readily be contacted for this purpose. In fact, there are specific sites in the internet that provides listings and information on this.

Itsupportquotes.com provides a listing of local computer and network security companies and some basic information on them. You may even secure initial quotes on specific IT services from this website. This is invaluable for those who intend to outsource some or all of their IT requirements.
